The same calcium you take
that may help protect your colon may also help prevent bone loss. Two million
men have osteoporosis, including one-third of men over the age of
75. In fact, one in eight men over the age of 50 have fractures related
to this disease. Osteoporosis is a disease characterized by low bone mass
and deterioration of bone tissue, leading to bone fragility. It often
progresses without symptoms or pain until a fracture occurs, usually in
the hip, spine or wrist. It can lead to pain, disability and, in some
cases, even death.
Most of us don't get enough calcium from our diets, and it becomes even
harder to do so as we get older. That's because bone loss increases with
age, as does your need for calcium. Men and women over age 50 should
consume 1200 mg daily, compared with 1000 mg for younger adults, to help
maintain strong bones and a healthy colon.
