Gastroenterology
experts now recommend 1200 mg of elemental calcium daily from calcium
carbonate, to help promote a healthy colon. Emerging science has
revealed how calcium may play an important role in protecting your colon.
A major clinical study published in The New England Journal of Medicine
found taking two over-the-counter tablets daily may help reduce the risk
of recurrence of colon polyps - a risk factor for colon cancer.
In addition, a study published in the
Journal of the National Cancer Institute examining the association between
calcium and colon cancer risk found significant risk reduction in distal
colon cancer among participants with a calcium intake of 700-800 mg per
day or higher compared with those taking less than or equal to 500 mg per
day. No association was found in the proximal colon.
